TRAFFIC SAFETY & PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
U.S. Department of Transportation just released a new technical report on Incidence of Pedestrian and Bicyclist Crashes by Hybrid Electric Passenger Vehicles. The report concludes that hybrid vehicles have a higher incidence rate of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes than do combustion engine vehicles in certain vehicle maneuvers. For vehicles slowing or stopping, backing up, or entering or leaving a parking space, where the difference between the sound levels produced by the hybrid versus combustion engine vehicle is the greatest, a statistically significant effect was found due to engine type. The Hybrids was two times more likely to be involved in a pedestrian crash in these situations than was an combustion engine vehicle.

PROJECT ETRANS
Together with Cleantech Motors we are participating in etrans, an EU funded project with the purpose of making green transportation and electric vehicles a commercial success in Denmark. We have contributed to the “Electric Vehicles and Sound” project with focus on increasing traffic safety and the driving experience in electric vehicles. Latest we installed a prototype of the ECTUNES safety sound system in the etrans electric vehicle sound simulator. The simulator is displayed at different events around Denmark.

COP15 e_COLLECTION EXHIBITION
In connection with the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 7. – 18. December the Design School of Kolding and project etrans will exhibit at the renown Illum shopping center under the topic “Sustainable design and future transportation”. The etrans electric vehicle simulator including the ECTUNES safety sound system will be displayed and people will be able to create their own electric vehicle sound. The exhibition is open to the public 3. – 18. December in Illum 4th floor.

As a result pedestrian safety is a growing concern due to the almost silent operation of these vehicles.
Children, pedestrians, cyclists and especially the blind and partially sighted people may be put at risk as they cannot hear these quiet vehicles approaching, making crossing the streets dangerous.
This problem is gaining recognition, but there are currently no product solutions available.
